Built in 1937, these facilities are fighter aircraft hangars constructed by the Japanese military during the Second World War through the forced mobilisation of residents of Jeju Island. Twenty hangars were built at the time; nineteen survive intact today, while only the ruins remain of the remaining one. These remains are above-ground structures that show how Japan sought to build Jeju Island into a base for military sorties. Although many artificial caves exist that were dug to establish defensive positions, this is the only example that shows a large number of above-ground facilities concentrated in one place.
