Former Building of the North and West Educational Association at Konkuk University, Seoul
서울 건국대학교 구 서북학회회관 · 서울 建國大學校 舊 西北學會會館

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in the Renaissance style as the headquarters of a patriotic national organisation, it was dismantled and rebuilt, within the grounds of Konkuk University, in 1985. At the time of its construction, this building was erected in Nagwon-dong, Jongno-gu, as the headquarters of the patriotic national organisation known as the North and West Educational Association. During the Japanese colonial period it served as the school building for nationalist schools such as Oseong School, Boseong Jeonmun School and Hyeopseong Vocational School, before being acquired in 1941 by Dr Yu Seok-chang, the founder of Konkuk University. After Liberation, various political organisations and educational institutions were founded in this building, and in 1946 the Joseon School of Politics, the forerunner of Konkuk University, was established here. It was later used, among other things, as the office of the Konkuk University Foundation. In 1977 it was dismantled under an urban redevelopment plan, and its main materials were stockpiled and stored at the present Konkuk University campus (Mojin-dong) until it was restored in 1985 and has since served as a memorial hall and museum for the university's founder. Comparing photographs taken at the time of construction with those taken before dismantling, it is presumed that at least the roof underwent repair at some point between construction and the 1977 dismantling. The building restored at its present site was based on its appearance as of 1977.
