Steam Locomotive at Jangdan Station on the Gyeongui Railroad Line
경의선 장단역 증기기관차 · 京義線 長湍驛 蒸氣機關車

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis steam locomotive travelled north from Gaeseong Station to Hanpo Station in Hwanghae Province to carry military supplies for the Allied forces during the Korean War, but as the military situation worsened it was heading back south when, late at night on 31 December 1950, it was bombed and derailed at Jangdan Station on the Gyeongui Line, coming to a stop where it remains. Rusted a deep reddish-black and corroded, it lay abandoned inside the Demilitarised Zone for more than half a century, and the Korea Heritage Service designated it a National Registered Heritage to protect and manage it as a poignant historical symbol of the division of North and South Korea.
