Built in 1954, this building is the main building of Chosun University, Korea's first privately founded university. Construction began in 1947 but ran into difficulties because of the Korean War; nevertheless, all faculty, staff and parents pressed ahead through every hardship, and the building was completed eight years after ground was broken. At the time of its construction it consisted of five gabled roofs at the centre, but after several expansions it now extends to a length of about 370 m and comprises nineteen gabled roofs in all. Because of its distinctive form, it is regarded as a building symbolic of Gwangju.
