Built in 1955 to the design of the Gwangju-born architect Jeong Ok-jin, this was the first building erected at Chonnam National University. It is made up of three parts: a three-storey main block at the centre, flanked on either side by single-storey lecture halls attached like wings. The central section has entrance doors set within a pointed arch, with rectangular, circular and arch-shaped windows arranged harmoniously around it. In the difficult circumstances of material and labour shortages after the Korean War, the university set up its own brick kiln to produce the bricks needed and built the structure from them.
