Former Sangbuk-myeon Office, Ulsan
울산 구 상북면사무소 · 蔚山 舊 上北面事務所

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe building combines a Korean-style tile-roofed structure with elements of Japanese wooden building style, and it clearly shows the structure and form of wooden government-office buildings of the Japanese colonial period. It was completed in 1932 as the office of Sangbuk-myeon, which had been formed in 1928 by merging Sangnam-myeon, south of the stream, and Habuk-myeon, north of the stream. A conference room (60㎡) was added in 1947 and a civil affairs office (70㎡) in 1976, and afterwards a dining hall, a storage room, a garage, a farmers' counselling office and other extensions were added. After the new Sangbuk-myeon office building was completed in July 2001, this building stood unused until it began to be used as the Sangbuk-myeon Community Service Centre from 2003. When the Sangbuk-myeon office was built, several buildings of this type existed in Ulsan, but this is the only one still standing today. It was renovated in 1985 (mainly the interior), and all the exterior windows were replaced with aluminium sash windows. Six pillars were replaced between 1990 and 2000, and in 2003 the ceiling, interior floor and inner walls were altered so the building could serve as a community service centre (fitness room).
