Main Building and Presbytery of Eonyang Catholic Church, Ulsan
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the first Catholic church built in the Ulsan area, and the building illustrates well how religious architecture introduced during the Japanese colonial period was adopted and took root in Korea. Father Emile Beaudevin, known by his Korean name Jeong Do-pyeong (1897–1976), took up his post at Eonyang Catholic Church on 14 May 1927. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new church building and presbytery was held on 25 May 1928, and the main church and presbytery were consecrated on 25 October 1936. By 1990 a total of eight buildings had been newly built or extended on the site. Eonyang Catholic Church was the second parish established in the Diocese of Busan, and as the wellspring of Catholic faith in the Yeongnam region it gave rise to 13 holy sites and historic sites and 16 gongso, small mission chapels without a resident priest. In recent years a windbreak room and shoe cabinet were added using window sashes and glass on the left side of the entrance at the front of the main building, and a few years ago the corrugated galvanised-iron roof was removed and replaced with sandwich panels.
