Built in 1911, this building is the main sanctuary of Yangdong Church, which the American Southern Presbyterian missionary Rev. Eugene Bell (Korean name: Bae Yu-ji) established as the first church in the Mokpo area. Yangdong Church began in 1897, when missionaries and believers pitched a tent and held worship services, and the building was later erected through the efforts of the congregation. It was built mainly of stone that the congregation carried themselves from Yudalsan Mountain, and unusually, a taegeuk (yin-yang) pattern is carved above the left entrance door.
