Modern Korean-style House in Teuk-ri, Sancheong

This house was built in 1930 by Min Jae-ho, who served as county magistrate of Jeongju in North Pyongan Province during the Japanese colonial period, and is a two-storey wooden house, a rarity in the provinces at the time. The ground floor follows a gyeopjip-style plan, with rooms arranged in two rows front and back: from left to right, a kitchen, main room, upper room, daecheong (a wooden-floored central hall), side room and a hamsil, a firebox used solely for heating rather than cooking. On the upper floor, a platform bed topped with boards was set above the floor to keep the space cool in summer, and this was used as the bedroom. The house is unusual for combining a traditional timber-frame structure with Japanese-style joinery techniques, for its practical floor plan, and for having its upper floor formed as a nu-maru, an elevated, open-sided wooden floor used for cooling.
