Water Supply Facilities of Munhwa-dong, Tongyeong
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This facility is a water-supply drainage structure built in 1933 to supply drinking water to the surrounding area. Built during the Japanese colonial period as infrastructure for Japan's exploitation of Korea, it stands as physical evidence of that history. The entrance structure to the reservoir is now coated over in cement, its original form no longer discernible, but the erased traces of the inscription that once stood above it — the characters "天祿永昌", praising the Japanese king — bear witness to the history of exploitation perpetrated by the Japanese. The facility stands atop a low hill with a fine view over the city of Tongyeong. Hexagonal in plan, with a domed roof, an arched entrance and decorative projecting stonework, it is a good example of the Expressionist architectural style of its period.
