Modern Korean-style House in Gyo-dong, Miryang
밀양 교동 근대 한옥 · 密陽 校洞 近代 韓屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe main house (anchae) was built around 1915 and the men's quarters (sarangchae) in 1937. This house was built by Son Yeong-don (1887–1954), a Confucian scholar from Miryang and a major shareholder of Gupo Bank, Korea's first Korean-run regional bank, so that his second son, Son Jeong-sik, could set up an independent household. On a plot elongated from east to west, seven buildings, including the main house, are arranged around an inner courtyard (anmadang) and a men's-quarters courtyard (sarangmadang). Centred on the main room of the anchae, a variety of spaces — for ancestral rites, storage, entertaining guests and family life — together with their associated storage spaces, display features typical of a hanok of the modern period. Built in the traditional style in the early modern period, the house retains well the layout and floor plan of its anchae (main house), sarangchae (men's quarters) and haengnangchae (servants' quarters). According to its history, the anchae was built around 1915 and the sarangchae in 1937 — confirmed by an ink inscription on a supporting purlin beam of the sarangchae's floor — and repair work on the anchae, begun in 2003, has now been completed. Three bays were added in front of the anchae's kitchen, giving the building its present reversed-ㄱ (L)-shaped plan.
