Modern Korean-style House in Toero-ri, Miryang
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built around 1910, this house was the residence of Yi Byeong-su, the second son of Hangjae Yi Ik-gu (1838–1912), who in 1907 founded Hwasan Uisuk, a school set up to teach surveying and other practical skills alongside a traditional education. Around the central courtyard stand a straight-line (il-shaped) main quarters (anchae) to the north, an L-shaped (giyeok-shaped) men's quarters (sarangchae) to its west, and a straight-line storehouse (gotganchae) facing the main quarters, with a family shrine situated behind the men's quarters. While the house follows the architectural form and layout conventions of a yangban, or noble-class, house of the late Joseon period, it also shows the features of a modern hanok, including the expansion of the front and rear eave spaces, the enlargement of internal storage, and the use of modern materials. Built in the traditional style of the early modern period, the house retains in good condition the layout and floor plan of its main quarters, men's quarters and middle-gate quarters, offering a glimpse of an outstanding approach to spatial composition. The main quarters and men's quarters were built in the 1910s. A gate quarters originally stood to the south but was demolished, and the house is now entered through a gate quarters on the east side, whose roof, unlike the other buildings, has been replaced with Japanese-style tiles. The main quarters retain their original straight-line plan and exterior in good condition, although a toilet has been added to the rear and the kitchen converted to a standing-style kitchen. The men's quarters have been altered by the addition of a side corridor, the extension of the eaves, and the installation of aluminium window frames in front of the main hall (daecheong).
