Built in 1911, Speer Hall was constructed with 5,000 dollars donated by Mrs. M. L. Sterns of the United States in memory of her late younger sister, Jennie Speer. A gable above the central entrance porch emphasises the frontal symmetry of the building, a stringcourse decorates the line between the first and second storeys, and tall vertical windows are repeated along the walls. Rather than the red brick commonly used at the time, the building is distinctively built of grey brick. It is the oldest building of the Jennie Speer Memorial School for Girls, regarded as a base for Protestant missionary work and a cradle of women's education in the Gwangju region.
