Haemanggul Tunnel is a semicircular tunnel, 4.5 m high and 131 m long, built in 1926 to connect Jungang-ro — the road in front of the former Gunsan City Hall — with Haemang-dong, the centre of the fishing industry, and it stands as a representative civil-engineering structure reflecting the face of modern Gunsan. During the Japanese colonial period, the Gunsan Shinto shrine and its shrine square (now Seo Elementary School), a public hall, the Provincial Gunsan Medical Centre and Anguksa Temple (now Heungcheonsa Temple) stood nearby, making the tunnel a key point of passage with heavy traffic. During the Korean War, the command headquarters of the North Korean forces stationed in Gunsan was set up inside the tunnel, which then came under attack from Allied air force planes — making it an important site in the history of modern Korea.
