Tongyeong Undersea Tunnel
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built in 1932, this tunnel is the first undersea structure in East Asia, connecting Tongyeong with Mireukdo Island. It was constructed during the Japanese colonial period as part of the infrastructure of Japan's exploitation of Korea, and the inscription "龍門達陽," said to be in the calligraphy of Yamaguchi, the Japanese county magistrate of Tongyeong who played a leading role in building the tunnel, survives as direct testimony to this history of Japanese exploitation. It was built to shorten the distance between the two areas as the migration of Japanese fishermen intensified. The tunnel section is 483 m long, 5 m wide and 3.5 m high, reaching a maximum depth of 10 m below sea level, and is built of reinforced concrete.
