Modern Korean-style House in Gwancheong-ri, Jeongeup
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built in the 1940s, this house was converted into a dwelling using timber salvaged from a dismantled building that had belonged to Bocheongyo, a Korean new religious movement. After Bocheongyo's decline, it is said that Jo Sang-won, a large landowner from the Gobu area, bought the materials around 1938 and spent two years building the house. In the main hall (anchae), the ondol-heated rooms are grouped around a central kitchen in a layout shaped like the Chinese character for "field" (田), while the narrow wooden-floored veranda (toenmaru) at the front of the main hall connects with the wooden-floored room to its right in an L-shaped arrangement, efficiently organising the flow of movement between rooms. These features are a good illustration of the architectural characteristics of the modern hanok.
