This facility is one of eight small blast furnaces installed by Japan's Koregawa Steel after it built a factory in Samcheok, Gangwon State. Koregawa Steel was renamed Samhwa Steel Mill after Liberation. POSCO acquired it in 1993 and restored it to its original form, and since 2003 it has been displayed in the outdoor exhibition area of the POSCO History Museum. It is the oldest blast furnace built in South Korea and the only one still surviving. Until Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO) was established, it produced 20 tonnes of pig iron a day, serving as the country's only blast furnace. As an industrial facility that provides important material for the history of Korea's steelmaking technology and the iron and steel industry, it is of high historical and industrial value.
