Dangunjeon Shrine, Gokseong
곡성 단군전 · 谷城 檀君殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in 1931, this shrine enshrines a portrait of Dangun Wanggeom, the legendary founding father of Korea. It was erected by Sin Tae-yun (1885–1961), who had led the calls for independence in Gokseong during the March First Movement, in order to instil national consciousness in younger generations. Even under Japanese colonial rule, it is said that people gathered here on Gaecheonjeol, the national holiday marking Dangun's founding of the nation, to hold rites and pray for Korea's independence. The building has a gable roof with three bays across the front and two bays to the side. Its ikgong brackets, a type of decorative roof bracket, are carved with lotus flowers and buds, and the ends of its beams are lavishly decorated in the shape of phoenix heads.
