Old Walls of Hakdong Village, Goseong
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The old walls of Hakdong Village are built of flat stones, 2–3cm thick, gathered from Sutaesan Mountain, combined with yellow clay, giving them an appearance distinct from the walls of other villages. These earth-and-stone walls (tosokdam) are built up to a height of 0.4–1m using large flat stones, topped with smaller flat stones and clay, and finished at the top with a large flagstone. The same method is used for the stone platforms (gidan) of buildings and the embankments (dondae) of rear gardens, creating harmony with the walls, and the walls blend well with the bamboo groves around the village to produce a beautiful scene redolent with the atmosphere of Namdo, Korea's southern provinces.
