Birthplace of O Ji-ho, Hwasun
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built in the 1800s, this building is the birthplace of O Ji-ho (1905–1982), a towering figure of Korea's modern Western-style painting scene and a pioneer of Korean-style Impressionism. It follows the straight-line, 'il'-shaped layout typical of ordinary houses in this region. The sarangchae (the men's quarters), with a seven-kan front, and the anchae (the women's quarters) are arranged one behind the other, and the studio is half wooden-floored and half heated by ondol, the traditional underfloor heating system. This is where O Ji-ho spent his childhood, and where he lived and worked for a time after returning from his studies in Japan.
