Tunnel Fortifications of Imperial Japan on Eoseungsaengak Volcanic Cone, Jeju
제주 어승생악 일제 동굴진지 · 濟州 御乘生嶽 日帝 洞窟陣地

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt around 1945, this facility served as the garrison of the headquarters of the Japanese 58th Army, the highest command of the Japanese military on Jeju, and was built as a final point of resistance in case the tunnel positions at Gamaoreum fell. It consists of two bunkers and three tunnel positions; the longest of these, 300 m in length, has three entrances and an interior arranged in a grid pattern. The pillboxes, known as tochka (fortified concrete gun emplacements), were built solidly of thick reinforced concrete, with trapezoidal embrasures through which the exterior could be observed. It illustrates the history of invasion in which the Japanese military, driven onto the defensive in the closing stages of the Pacific War, turned Jeju Island into a base of resistance.
