Tunnel Fortifications of Imperial Japan on Gamaoreum Volcanic Cone, Jeju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built around 1945, this facility served as the base of the 58th Army Headquarters, the highest command of the Japanese military on Jeju Island, and was constructed to serve as a final stronghold of resistance should the Gamaoreum tunnel fortifications fall. It consists of two bunkers and three tunnel fortifications. Among these, one tunnel measuring 300m in length has three entrances and an interior laid out in a grid pattern. The pillboxes were solidly built with thick reinforcing bars and cement, with trapezoidal gun ports for observing the surroundings. The site illustrates the history of Japanese aggression, in which the Japanese military, driven onto the defensive in the final stages of the Pacific War, turned Jeju Island into a base of last resistance.
