Tunnel Fortifications of Imperial Japan on Seoubong Peak, Jeju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built around 1945, this facility was constructed for the Japanese military to launch suicide bombing attacks against Allied fleets during the Pacific War, and comprises 18 tunnel-type galleries and two bunker facilities. Among these, the tunnel fortification shaped like the character 王 was built far more densely and systematically than other Japanese naval special-attack-unit fortifications elsewhere on Jeju Island. It is a site of painful history, where not only residents of Jeju Island but also people brought in from other regions were mobilised and subjected to physical and mental suffering.
