On 16 April 1925, Tanaka (田中筆吉) — who was then engaged in the civil engineering business and is known to have crossed to the Korean Peninsula from Okayama Prefecture, where he was born in 1876, in order to carry out the construction of the newly built Gyeongbu Line — built the single-storey wooden Japanese-style house now standing at the centre of the site, a sokbokdo-hyeong house with rooms arranged along a single corridor. In 1914 he had founded Tanaka-gumi (田中組) and took part in such projects as the reclamation at Busanjin and the construction of the Donghae Nambu Line (see the Joseon Gongnojamyeonggam, a directory of meritorious persons of Joseon). In June 1931, a two-storey wooden Japanese-style house was added as a first extension. After liberation, a two-storey reinforced-concrete house was built onto the east side of the single-storey wooden house. On 11 December 1971, Hwang Seong-rae, a former chairman of the Ilmaek Foundation, purchased the property, with the transfer registered on 20 December (see the closed copy of the property register). No repair records survive, but the ridge-beam inscriptions of the first- and second-floor wooden houses show that the extension was made in 1931, and structural differences indicate that a further round of extension took place even after liberation.
