Lighthouse on Eocheongdo Island, Gunsan
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This lighthouse was built after the Sino-Japanese War, when the importance of the shipping route to China came into focus. The triangular pediment over the entrance, decorated with a flower-bud motif, and the cross-section that narrows towards the top, blend well with the surrounding seascape. The prefabricated spiral iron staircase inside and the folding iron floor panel designed to keep out intruders are also distinctive features. Early lighthouse elements survive well, including traces of the mercury-float rotating lamp apparatus, a wooden duct system in which the deungmyeonggi (the lamp mechanism that produced the light) was floated on mercury so that it could be rotated. It is said that the missionary Appenzeller was martyred in the sea off Eocheongdo Island, in front of the lighthouse.
