김제 부거리 옹기가마 · 金堤 富巨里 甕器가마
Registered Cultural HeritageJoseon · 1729

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in the late Joseon period, Buchang village was founded by Catholic believers who had migrated there to escape religious persecution. Until around 200 years ago there were six earthenware kilns in this area, but all were lost except for this kiln and its workshop, which alone survive. It is a traditional wood-fired kiln: a site was prepared on the slope of a hillside and the kiln was built by stacking traditional hand-made earthen bricks. Fire can be fed through openings in its side, allowing the temperature throughout the kiln to be kept constant and enabling even firing despite the kiln's elongated form.
