This is a calligraphic scroll written by Kim Ku (1876–1949). It was one of several scrolls lying on his desk at the time of his death on 26 June 1949, and bloodstains remaining along its edge vividly attest to the circumstances of that moment, giving it great historical value as a relic. Kim Ku is known to have taken up calligraphy in earnest after Patriot Yun Bong-gil's 1932 bombing in Shanghai, and of the roughly 150 pieces of his calligraphy known today, this one bears the title 愼其獨, meaning "to be prudent even when alone," reflecting the circumstances and state of mind he faced at the time and carrying great symbolic value. Dimensions (width × height): 400 × 1100 mm; material: hanji, traditional Korean mulberry paper; date of production: June 1946.
