Diagnosis Written by Allen
알렌의 진단서 · 알렌의 診斷書

This is the oldest surviving modern Western-style medical diagnosis in Korea, issued by Allen, who was in charge of Jejungwon, Korea's first modern hospital. On 13 September 1885, Allen issued it to C. A. Welsch, an official of the Haegwan (the customs office of the time), stating that he required one to two weeks of recuperation. Allen (H. N. Allen, 1858–1932) arrived in Korea in September 1884 as a missionary of the American Northern Presbyterian Church and served as a physician attached to the American legation, in which capacity he proposed the establishment of Jejungwon. He was in charge of Jejungwon from April 1885 until the end of September 1887, after which he moved into a diplomatic career, serving as secretary at the Korean legation in the United States and later as US Minister to Korea.
