Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the activity report for the first year (10 April 1885 – 10 April 1886) of Jejungwon, Korea's first modern-style hospital. It was compiled by the Jejungwon physicians H. N. Allen (1858–1932) and J. H. Heron (1856–1890) to mark the first anniversary of the hospital's opening. The report is an important source for studying the diseases that afflicted Koreans in the late nineteenth century, and it carries Allen's own signature, "Compliments H. N. Allen," at the top of the cover, giving it great value as a historical record for the study of medical history. It contains a floor plan of Jejungwon, an account of the circumstances of the hospital's founding, the diseases common in Joseon, statistics on outpatients and inpatients treated over the year, and the hospital's financial situation; in particular, the patient statistics are classified in detail according to the disease classification system of modern medicine.
