Brass Floral Candlestick
유제화형촛대 · 鍮製花形燭臺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a brassware candlestick in the form of a lamp stand, with the candle holder set on a lotus-shaped base and fitted with two candle sockets. Modern features can be found in the height-adjustable candlestick, in the fully-bloomed flower-petal-shaped flame guard used in place of the traditional butterfly or bat motifs, and in the lotus-shaped base, designed so that the petal shapes could be made as separate parts and then assembled. Overall, the skill with which the lotus motif has been organically rendered throughout is outstanding. Because the piece reveals, through its manufacturing technique and formative beauty, the shift of modern-period craft objects from practical utensils towards art-craft, it has great historical and craft value. It is a candlestick that was used by Thomas Hobbs (1880–?), who came to Korea as a Salvation Army missionary in 1910 and carried out missionary work in Korea until he was forcibly deported by the Japanese in 1941; his descendants donated it to Ewha Womans University through the Ewha International Foundation on 15 May 1989.
