Table Used for the Signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement

This is the table used by Mark W. Clark, Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command and representative of the American side, when he signed the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War. The armistice agreement was concluded on 27 July 1953. At 10 a.m. that day, at Panmunjom, the chief delegates of the two sides — Admiral Harrison of the United Nations Command and Lieutenant General Nam Il of the Korean People's Army — signed the agreement documents. Admiral Harrison then went to the Munsan Theatre inside the UN base to obtain the signature of General Clark, who was waiting there, while Lieutenant General Nam Il travelled to Pyeongyang to obtain the signatures of Kim Il-sung and Peng Dehuai (彭德懷). General Clark signed the agreement at 1 p.m. that day, watched by representatives of the sixteen countries that had sent troops to the war. With this the armistice agreement came into effect, and, as agreed, fighting between the two sides ceased at 10 p.m. that same day. As the table used at the time of the Korean War armistice agreement, it is valued as a historical artefact symbolising the state of truce, or ceasefire, that continues to this day.
