This knife belonged to Kim Do-hyeon (1852–1914), a commander of the Righteous Army, the volunteer resistance forces, who was active in the Andong region of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Kim Do-hyeon was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal, in 1962, and this knife was donated to the Independence Hall of Korea by his descendants on 24 January 1985. The blade is inscribed with the characters "三寅劍" and the scabbard with "倡義劍" ("Sword of the Righteous Uprising"); the wooden scabbard is thought to be a later addition. In February 1896, Kim Do-hyeon, together with Yu Si-yeon, gathered Righteous Army volunteers from the Yeongyang and Andong areas and raised troops at Cheongnyangsan Mountain. He occupied Bonghwa and Yeongju, arming his men with weapons surrendered by the local magistrates, advanced on Andong, and toured Cheongsong, Uiseong, Yeongdeok and Yeonghae calling for righteous uprisings. In 1907, when Emperor Gojong personally issued a secret edict urging a righteous army uprising, Kim attempted to raise troops again, but the plan was discovered beforehand and he was arrested. He later disbanded his forces and devoted himself to education, founding Yeongheung School in Yeongyang.
