Former Building of Catholic Diocese of Mokpo
목포 천주교 구 교구청 · 木浦 天主敎 舊 敎區廳

This building was used as the first base for missionary work in the Gwangju and South Jeolla region (which at the time included the Jeju region) after the Apostolic Prefecture of Gwangju was established in 1937. It is symmetrical around a central front porch decorated with a semicircular arch and pilasters; horizontal string courses decorate the line beneath the eaves and between storeys, and tall vertical windows are repeated across the façade. Inside, the original form is well preserved overall, including the timber staircase, the plaster moulding on the ceiling, and the hanger-type sliding doors. After the diocesan office relocated to Gwangju in 1956, the building was used as the Mokpo branch convent of the Missionary Sisters of St Columban, as St Columban's Hospital, and as Sungsin Nursing College. It is valuable as a place through which the early history of the Catholic Archdiocese of Gwangju and the history of the medical missionary work of the Missionary Society of St Columban can be traced.
