Jipyeong Brewery is a building in which traditional liquor has been made for three generations by the same family, using traditional methods unchanged. It is distinguished by its tall windows for ventilation, by the rice chaff packed into its walls and ceiling for insulation, by rafters woven in a bamboo-mat pattern in place of the usual thin support laths (sanja), and by the use of earthen bricks on part of its outer walls. Built during the Japanese colonial period, it is an eclectic structure that joins Japanese-style timber framing onto a Korean timber frame to create a large open space, and it shows clearly, in architectural terms, the functional character of a takju (unrefined, unstrained rice wine) production plant of its day.
