The First Church of the Marine Corps Headquarters
서울 해병대사령부 초대교회 · 서울 海兵隊司令部 初代敎會
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krFollowing the establishment of the Marine Corps at Deoksan Airfield in Jinhae on 15 April 1949, this building began as the "First Church of the Marine Corps" on 12 March 1951. After the Korean War, as the Marine Corps Headquarters moved to the site now occupied by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the church passed through a "tent church" and a "Quonset-hut church" before being rebuilt in its present, permanent form on 31 December 1959. When the Marine Corps Headquarters was disbanded on 10 October 1973, the building lost its function as a church and was used for other purposes, including as a storehouse for the Capital Defense Command, for many years. On 7 April 2003, to mark the 54th anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps, the damaged and altered church building was restored and brought back into use as a chapel. During this period it was known as the "Shield Church," but in 2005 it recovered the name "First Church of the Marine Corps Headquarters," which it retains today.
