After the Army 1st Training Centre, which played a major role as a large-scale military base during the Korean War, was established at Moseulpo, Jeju Island, in 1951, the 98th Army Hospital was stationed at this site the following year, 1952, combining the functions of a medical corps and an evacuation hospital, and this building can be regarded as continuing the same line as the Training Centre. About fifty wards once stood here during the Korean War, but after Daejeong Girls' High School opened on the site in March 1964 the ward buildings were demolished one by one, leaving only this single building today. While the medical corps was stationed here, the facility served not only soldiers but also Jeju islanders and refugees who came for treatment; although the interior has been altered, the exterior largely retains its original form.
