Brady Hall of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Gwangju
천주교 광주대교구청 브레디관

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn 1958, the Papal Nuncio to Korea (Lamgertini), judging that the graduates produced by the Catholic seminary in Seoul alone could not meet Korea's need for clergy, proposed establishing a seminary in the provinces, and in 1959 the Holy See granted permission to establish a seminary in Gwangju. Accordingly, Bishop Henry, head of the Gwangju diocese, raised funds in the United States to secure a site and build a school; the site was secured in 1960, the school building was constructed in 1961, and in 1962 new students were recruited and theological education began, bringing about the opening of Daegeon Seminary. In 1994 the school's name was changed to Gwangju Catholic University, and in 1998 Gwangju Catholic University relocated its campus to Nampyeong, after which this building came to be used as a facility of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Gwangju. At present, the window and door frames on the exterior walls retain their original form well, with the security sashes, mosquito screens, the ironwork of the sliding sash windows and the stopping devices all preserved without alteration. However, it is judged that as the open-plan communal bedrooms were converted into individual bedrooms, uniform alterations have progressively been made to the floors and interior walls.
