On 12 March 1919, Mun Il-pyeong read aloud, at Bosingak Belfry in Jongno, Seoul, a document titled "Aewonseo" ("Petition of Grief"), issued in the name of representatives of the thirteen provinces of Joseon and asserting Korea's independence. He led the ensuing demonstration movement, and was arrested by the Japanese police and imprisoned. As a journalist and historian, he devoted his life to popularising Korean history and awakening national consciousness through what he called "Joseonhak" (Joseon studies), and is remembered as an independence activist.
