At the founding meeting of the Baekcheon branch of the Sin'ganhoe, a Korean nationalist organisation, on 16 April 1928, O Gi-man, serving on the preparatory committee, attempted to distribute a manifesto together with Hong Se-hyeok and others, but was arrested by the Japanese police and endured imprisonment. After his release he went into exile in Shanghai, China, where he formed the Yuho Hanin Dongnip Undongja Dongmaeng, an alliance of Korean independence movement activists resident in Shanghai, and on every anniversary of the national movement distributed manifestos to Koreans living there to inspire national consciousness, continuing the independence struggle in this way. In 1934 he was arrested by the Japanese police, sentenced to five years' imprisonment and suffered in Seodaemun Prison; he died that October from the after-effects of his imprisonment, an independence activist who gave his life for the nation.
