Yu Sang-gyu was a student at the Gyeongseong Medical Professional School during the March First Movement of 1919, in which he played a leading role by mobilising fellow students, and after the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea was established in Shanghai, he took part in investigating and collecting materials on the independence movement. In 1920 he served as secretary to An Chang-ho and joined the Heungsadan (Young Korean Academy). On the advice of Dosan An Chang-ho, he returned to Korea in 1924, resumed his studies, and continued his independence activities in the Suyangdongmaenghoe and the Donguhoe.
