Former Sohwa Elementary School, Suwon
수원 구 소화초등학교 · 水原 舊 小花初等學校

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building served as the annex school of Buksuwon Catholic Church, standing lengthwise and facing south at the northern edge of the church grounds. It forms an L-shaped plan, with the main building joined to an education hall. It was built in 1954 as the first elementary school building erected in Suwon by the US Catholic Welfare Conference. Because the country was at war and materials were scarce, the outer walls were built of stone while the interior was framed with timber sourced locally; the structure and finish of these materials remain exposed both inside and outside the building. It is a two-storey building with a gabled roof and elongated proportions (30.55 m along the long side, 9.2 m along the short side). Three classrooms stand side by side on each floor, six in total, following a typical school layout with a single-loaded corridor and a stairwell at one end of it.
