An Gyu-hong is an unusual figure in the history of Korea's independence movement. Most righteous army leaders of the late Korean Empire period were yangban Confucian scholars, but An had worked as a 'dapsari' — a hired farmhand, or meoseum — before becoming a leading commoner righteous army leader after Japan seized Korea's national sovereignty. This house is historically valuable not only as the residence of the righteous army leader An Gyu-hong, but also as the house of Bak Je-hyeon, who served as unnyanggwan — the officer responsible for provisions — for An's righteous army unit, supplying it with military goods.
