Built in 1920 as Gukpo-godaek, the residence of a noble family in the Gurye area, this building was relocated to its present site in 1987. While based on traditional hanok construction, it partially incorporates modern building techniques reflecting the circumstances of the modern era, clearly illustrating how hanok architecture changed over time. It is also judged to hold value as a space for transmitting traditional culture and art through education and creative work, having been used by Jo Bang-won (pen name Asan, 1922–2014), a master of Namjonghwa, the Southern School style of literati ink painting, who was active in the modern period.
