Built in 1918 for early missionary work during the initial spread of Christianity to Wonju, this house holds historical significance as the birthplace of Christian mission work in Wonju and as the only surviving modern cultural heritage building among the many Western-style buildings once erected across the hillside area of Ilsan-dong — a conduit through which modern civilisation, including Western medicine, education, lifestyles and architecture, flowed into the region. Its architectural features include the exterior walls of the living room and reception room, which project from the red-brick exterior in a half-hexagonal plan; the inter-storey cornices, which project in stepped form through highly decorative brickwork; the circular brickwork around the round window on the side wall of the main entrance; and the flat-arch brickwork above the window and door openings.
