The former Jeju Island testing station of the Institute of Pharmacognosy, Gyeongseong Imperial University, was built for the cultivation and production of medicinal herbs. Its architectural form can be understood from a plan drawn up at the time, the 'Layout Plan of the Jeju Island Testing Station of the Institute of Pharmacognosy, Gyeongseong Imperial University', and a distinctive feature is the detailing of the finishing materials applied to the porch to emphasise the building's frontality. The site is also highly valued for local history, as it was the workplace, from 1943 to 1945, of Seok Ju-myeong, known as the 'Butterfly Doctor' and a pioneer of Jeju studies.
